We all know the word and term – commitment. We have been asked for “it” and we have asked “it” of others throughout our work lives. It is foundational to all relationships and a source of great accomplishments.
But if you are like me you don’t often take the time to appreciate the true power that comes from genuinely committing yourself to something.
I recently ran across an expression of this in an excerpt from The Scottish Himalayan Expedition, by Scottish mountaineer and writer William Hutchison Murray.
Describing some of the early stages of his climbing experience he mused — “Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness…but the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help that would never otherwise have happened…”
Murray experienced this while planning and climbing mountains. It also is a great reminder and metaphor for HR professionals facing uphill challenges almost every day. Success begins with clarity of what needs to be done and then proclaiming and boldly committing to do it and moving ahead.
