Business Fitness Questionnaire

Although this questionnaire typically is directed to the senior leadership of organizations, the responsibilities for ensuring alignment fall in a variety of areas depending on the business. You may want to consider forwarding this information to others.

Take a few minutes and ask yourself the following questions. Answer them as honestly and objectively as you can. Your responses will give you clues as to where you are today in terms of aligned business and people practices required for efficiency and profitability. This tool can help you surface areas that may require your attention as you guide your business toward greater business success.

Do you have written statements for your organization that clearly present your purpose for being in business (mission) and your vision for the company? Can your senior managers and employees articulate these statements?

Do employees in your company understand what they can do each day to help you achieve your mission and vision? How do you know the degree of your employees' commitment to your mission and vision?

Do employees understand the business realities (market and legal forces) surrounding the company and what it takes for the business to be successful? What are the indicators that they do or do not understand?

Do your managers and supervisors fully appreciate the scope of their responsibilities in creating for employees a compliant, safe place to work that also protects the assets of your business? What draws you to this conclusion?

Do you have the best-equipped people doing your jobs and do their job descriptions keep them focused on producing quality work and providing quality service to internal and external customers?

Do your customers define service and quality the same way your employees do? How do you know?

How do your reward systems distinguish and encourage the types of results and behaviors in your employees that are necessary to achieve your customers' definition of service and your vision and mission?

Does your working environment support or inhibit your employees' peak performance in meeting customers' needs? How would your employees answer this question?

Do employees feel trained, supported and respected, and do they enjoy working for the company? How do you know?

Do your employees recommend others work for your business? Why or why not?

Are your employees customers of your company? What do they think the company does well and not so well? How does that compare to your customers? How do you know the answers to these questions?
